Free Hearing Evaluation from Smoky Mountain Hearing Specialists
If you or a loved one are wondering about their hearing, there is probably a good reason. A decrease in hearing ability affects people differently, and the only way to find out about your hearing is to visit a professional and let them evaluate you.
Smoky Mountain Hearing Specialists offers a FREE evaluation on a limited basis. Due to our busy schedule, please call to make your appointment at least a week in advance.
When you arrive for your exam at Smoky Mountain Hearing Specialists, you will be greeted by the friendly front office staff and asked to fill out several forms, which include those that record your personal information, medical history and verify your insurance.
When your exam begins, we will go over your personal information with you and ask you some questions that are designed to discover the specific types of environments in which you may be experiencing some difficulty in hearing.
Next, your ears will be examined using an otoscope. This instrument is used to see the ear canal and the ear drum, and determine whether or not there is ear wax obstructing the canal. Sometimes your specialist will have a video otoscope so you can see inside your ear as well!
The first test that is conducted is the pure tone hearing test, which is conducted in a quiet environment. Headphones that are connected to an audiometer will be placed over your ears. The audiometer transmits a series of tones at a variety of volumes into your ears to determine the exact point or “threshold” at which you can hear various frequencies of sounds. When you hear a sound, you will be asked either to say “yes” or to press a button.
Next is speech testing, where you will listen to a series of one and two syllable words and be asked to repeat them. This will determine the level at which you can detect and understand speech. Another test that may be conducted is a speech in noise test. This test will determine how well you hear sentences in a noisy environment.
The results of your tests will be recorded on a form called an audiogram, which we will review with you immediately following the test. The audiogram reflects your hearing loss in frequencies and decibels. You will be shown the type, pattern and degree of hearing loss, and the percentage of normal conversational speech that you are still able to hear. We will then relate these results to your concerns about your hearing. Your next step is to consider treatment solutions.
Our highly trained and friendly professionals can discuss the results of your evaluation so you will know what options you might want to consider. We offer state of the art technology and knowledgeable and friendly customer service. We are confident that our Smoky Mountain Hearing Specialists will provide the best care, and inform you of the treatment options available to you for your specific needs. However, there is no obligation to continue service after your evaluation.
